Ring in the New Year in Your Custom Home
Happy New Year from Colby Construction! The beginning of a new year is a great time to clear your home of clutter and start fresh again. This can be overwhelming, but if you go room by room and simplify the project you can find it a fulfilling task taking your time over the month of January. You can even simplify it by the amount of time you want to dedicate each day, and you will be surprised by all you can get down in even 10 – 30 minutes is you focus on one area.
The Kitchen
Start in the heart of your custom home with the kitchen. When you move into a new home you start out with a place for everything, and often as time goes by things get shifted and moved around. This is also a great time to declutter, you may find that you have utensils or serving items you don’t ever use, no time like the present to get rid of them. Remove everything from each drawer, wipe it out, return the items, placing any items you no longer need or no longer use in a bag to donate to someone who can use them. A thorough cleaning of the refrigerator is a great thing to do as well, leftovers from the holidays that lingered too long, outdated condiments that need to be thrown out. Check your filters as well to see if they need to be replaced.
The Family Room
It’s easy to let magazines and newspapers stack up, recycle the old ones and say good bye to 2021, allowing room and space for the new year. Pass puzzles you built in years past on to friends or family. Are their games your family has grown out of? Add those to your donation pile. Check your candles, if they are burned down, get rid of them. Now is a great time to check your lights as well, replace any bulbs that have burned out.
The Home Office
It’s easy for paperwork to pile up in the office. Go through your old bills and papers and shred and recycle everything you no longer need. Perhaps you’ve realized you get too many paper statements in the mail, this is a great time to change your accounts to paperless and online statements, with the goal of less clutter in 2022. Organize your file drawers to reflect what you need for this year. Perhaps you’ve been working from home for almost the past two years and are returning to the office, make sure you take out the items that can go back with you for a fresh start.
The Master Bathroom
Time to go through all of the drawers and cabinets. If you have medications that have expired, get rid of them. Beauty products you no longer use can often be donated to women’s shelters. Throw out old makeup and wipe down your drawers and cabinets.
Closets
Winter is a perfect time to go through your summer clothes and pull items you no longer wear, again add them to your donation pile and consider shelters, or other locations that items can be donated. If you haven’t already arrange your closet to have easy access to winter clothes, shoes and boots. Your kids can get involved with this too, pulling out items they have outgrown from their closets.
The feeling of clearing out space in your custom home is a great way to start a new year. Often times we find ourselves holding on to things we no longer need, and donating to others who need them will start their year off better too. Some great locations to donate in the South Eastern Wisconsin include:
