Lilac kitchen stars in luxury London apartment reno

Located inside a grand mansion block in the heart of London’s Bloomsbury, this period apartment has been redesigned and refurbished by LLI Design who transformed it from a dark, tired apartment into a gorgeous, light-filled home. The brief was to maintain and enhance the period details of the apartment, while combining the owners’ inherited furniture pieces with new contemporary pieces. The result is an elegant, eclectic mix.

From high ceilings to original cornices, skirtings, architraves and generously proportioned windows, the apartment had fabulous bones to work with, but the layout left a bit to be desired. The most significant part of the renovation saw two rooms combined on one side of the apartment to create a generous open plan library and dining room.

The dining room houses the clients’ much loved inherited pieces that were renovated, restored and French polished, bringing them back to life. As a contrast to the period furniture, a large contemporary brass pendant light sits above the dining table while an oversized, gilt framed wall mirror bounces light around the room. A Persian carpet pulls the look together.

The kitchen remained in its original position but was reconfigured to incorporate a small island, hidden utility area and pantry. Arguably the most showstopping part of the renovation, the kitchen features a bold lilac tone paired with dove grey and gold accents. Bleached wooden shelves and a statement gold pendant light add further visual interest to the room.

Traditional shaker style kitchen cabinets (some with glass fronts) showcase the owner’s glassware while gold pull handles and knobs further accent the space. A tall lilac lacquer unit disguises a small but very practical European laundry – the washer/dryer was placed at high level with a pull-out drawer below for laundry and shelves above for linen storage.

The music room features a polished black baby grand piano as its centrepiece. It sits on a statement Missoni chevron rug while dramatic mid blue bespoke joinery (with brass wall lights) completes the room.

The family bathroom features a simple, light palette of soft whites and Carrara marble effect porcelain tiles which makes the space feel larger than it once did. New cornices and picture rails help bring a period feel to the room while a simple ribbed globe pendant light adds a delicate accent.

The master bedroom features a palette of soft pinks, greys and taupe with a mix of tactile fabrics to create mood. The French styled bed features a bleached wooden frame and staggered height, vintage ribbed globe pendant lights sit above.
