Easy Knit-Look Headband · Free Crochet Pattern & Video Tutorial
I crocheted a headband in less than 30 minutes.
How, you ask? With this suuuuuper easy and adjustable crochet pattern that can fit ALL head sizes!
I've been wanting to add another handmade headband to my baby girl's accessories drawer for a long time coming, but the cooler climate here in the Pacific Northwest is more suitable for hats and bonnets with more coverage. The Summer Flower Headband and Lacy Flower Crown that I made for her are definitely Spring and Summer items.
However, I recently designed the Faux Knit Coffee Sleeve pattern (inspired by my Gold Luxe Cowl) and decided to make a larger version as a headband!
I was so delighted to see my Lena Rose wear it! It's not only stretchy, comfortable, and warm, but super easy to slide on her head. I love how fashionable and sweet it looks.
As the name of this project suggests, this project features faux knit stitches using crochet methods. The trick is to use half double crochet stitches and work in a special loop, which I'll explain in the free pattern below! I also have a full, step-by-step video tutorial of this project for those of you who'd like to crochet along with me!
There are a couple ways you can finish off this headband, too.
- Crochet it in one piece and simply cinch together the center to create the bow shape.
- Or, do step #1 and then whip up a short "bow cover" to go over the center portion!
This pattern is literally so easy to work up. With the repetitive stitching, it's quite therapeutic and I'll have to say that it made me feel awesomely productive. Yay for instant-gratification projects!
Lastly, I have to add that I just love how it turned out with the beautiful Caron Simply Soft Tweeds yarn in off white! I think the speckles and heathered look give it such a nice, rustic touch. Super befitting for the autumn and winter seasons! Make it as a birthday gift, holiday gift, or baby shower gift.

Level of Difficulty:
★★☆☆☆ Familiar Beginner.
Requires familiarity with stitches used (below).
Stitches/Terms Used:
- FO = fasten off
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- Fhdc = foundation half double crochet
- Crocheting in the 3rd loops
Materials:
- Medium weight (4) yarn
- 6mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Before beginning:
You must determine the headband length before crocheting. To do so, find out what the head circumference is by measuring your own head (if you are making it for yourself), or by using the 'head measurement' in the Hat Sizing & Measurement Reference Chart.Let's begin!
Make a long chain that is the same length as the head circumference length when slightly stretched out. Join with a sl st to the first chain.
(For example, if I’m making this headband for an 18” head, I will crochet a 16.5-17” chain that can comfortably stretch to 18”.)
R1: Ch 1, hdc in same st. Hdc in each ch around. Join the round with a sl st to first hdc’s 3rd loop.
R2: Ch 1, hdc in same st. Hdc around in the 3rd loop only. Join with a sl st to first hdc’s 3rd loop.
R3: Repeat R2 until your headband reaches the desired height.
(For reference, a toddler headband I made had a 17” starting chain and 9 rounds to reach 3” height.)
Final round: Sc around in the 3rd loop only. Join with a sl st to first hdc’s 3rd loop.
Fasten off with a long tail. Pinch the headband to form a cinched bow shape at the seam (where you have your starting and ending yarn tails). Tightly knot the two yarn tails together and wrap the tails around the headband’s center a few times. Knot it again in the back and weave in ends.
Optional Bow Cover (for the cinched center): Fhdc as many stitches as it takes to wrap around the cinched center. FO with a long tail and secure it around the middle of the headband.
